Shehu Sani commends protest in Senegal forcing President Macky Sall out of 2024 presidential race for third term
Senator Shehu Sani has commended the mass protest in Senegal that forced President Macky Sall to dump his ambition to contest the February 25, 2024 presidential election for a third term.
Senator Shehu Sani in tweet declared that the victory @ShehuSani as “The power of protest.”
President Macky Sall of Senegal had on Monday evening announced that he will not run for the president for a third term in the February 25, 2024 election in Senegal. The President made the announcement in the aftermath of persistent protests from the opposition in June.
President Sall in his broadcast, stated: : “My decision, long and carefully considered not to run in the next elections on February 25, 2024;”adding, “Even though the constitution gives me the right to do so.”
The President noted that his decision not to stand as candidate in the 2024 presidential election will be surprising to many who wished to see hum in the race. He said that he made the decision to save Senegal which is increasingly finding its feet.
President Sall had stated inter alia: “Even if I have the right, I felt that my duty is not to contribute to destroying what I have built for this country.
“I had said that the 2019 mandate was my last mandate. I know that this decision will come as a surprise to all those who have a friendship with me. Senegal is more than just me, it’s full of people capable of taking Senegal to the next level.”
