The poor should not bear the burden of sacrifice – Shehu Sani, others tell Tinubu
Amid rising petrol prices and growing economic challenges, Senator Shehu Sani and other leaders are urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the burden of sacrifices does not fall disproportionately on the poor.
Amid escalating petrol prices and the associated economic hardships, prominent leaders from the Nigerian Baptist Conference, alongside Senator Shehu Sani and former Kaduna State Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Chairman Rev. Joseph John Hayab, are calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take urgent action to alleviate the struggles of the Nigerian populace.
At the 64th Baptist Ministers Conference held in Kaduna on Wednesday, the leaders expressed grave concerns about the adverse effects of fuel price increases on citizens’ daily lives.
Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Assembly, highlighted the widespread suffering resulting from recent economic reforms.
He emphasized that while transformation often requires sacrifices, it should not disproportionately affect the poor.
“We are a nation of 224 million people, and we cannot overlook the serious economic challenges facing the masses,” Sani stated.
He urged those in power, including the President, Ministers, and Governors, to lead by example through personal sacrifices to foster national progress.

Rev. Israel Akanji, President of the Nigerian Baptist Conference, reinforced this message, calling for a more measured approach to economic reforms to alleviate pressure on citizens.
He advocated for a reduction in fuel prices, noting that such a move would have a ripple effect on food costs, rent, and education expenses.
Rev. Joseph Hayab added that while there have been advances in combating terrorism, the persistent threats of kidnapping and violence continue to plague the nation.
He urged the government to take decisive action to eradicate terrorism and restore peace and security for all Nigerians.
