FG reaffirms ban on unauthorized use of camouflage
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its ban on unauthorized use of military camouflage as part of efforts to address security challenges in the country.
The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammed Matawalle made this known on Monday, adding that only the Nigerian Police on joint operations and Armed Forces were allowed to use the camouflage.
The ban followed the illegal use of the camouflage by criminals to carry out their criminal activities across the country, stating that “the criminals among us have had to take advantage of the Military, Police and other security agencies’ gears to perpetrate crimes.”
He added that: “The present situation does not support the use of Military camouflage by people who are not authorized or not personnel’s of Defence Headquarters.”
Matawalle further stressed the need to streamline the personnel’s that were authorized to use the Military camouflage.
As contained in a statement on Monday by Henshaw Ogubike, the Defence ministry’s, Director Information, Press, and Public Relations, the Minister noted that the ban on other Para Military Agencies from the use of the Military camouflage was to bring sanity to the system and also as a way of checkmating criminal activities.
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu had recently issued a ban on the use of camouflage uniforms by para-military agencies.
Matawalle noted that: “The circular titled Observation on Proliferation in the Use of Camouflage Uniforms by Other Security Agencies in Nigeria,” personally signed by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, mandated personnels of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and the Federal Fire Service, among others, to discontinue the use of camouflage uniforms henceforth, following the directive issued by ONSA.”
He further assured of the commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigerian Police to enforce the directive by the NSA.
