U.S. Embassy, Consulate in Nigeria to close temporarily
The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will temporarily close on Monday, February 17, 2025, in observance of Presidents’ Day, a national holiday celebrated in the U.S.
The diplomatic mission confirmed the closure in a statement posted on X on Sunday, assuring the public that normal operations would resume the following day.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2025, in observance of Presidents’ Day. We will resume normal operations on Tuesday, February 18, 2025,” the statement read.
Presidents’ Day, observed annually on the third Monday of February, is a federal holiday dedicated to honoring the past and present leaders of the United States.
Originally established to recognize George Washington’s birthday, the holiday has evolved to celebrate all U.S. presidents.

During the closure, routine consular services such as visa processing and other administrative functions will be unavailable. However, emergency services will still be accessible through designated contact channels for urgent matters.
Nigerians planning to visit the embassy or consulate for visa applications, passport renewals, or other assistance are advised to adjust their schedules accordingly.
The U.S. mission in Nigeria encourages applicants to visit its official website or contact the embassy for further updates and alternative scheduling options.
The temporary closure highlights the diplomatic mission’s adherence to U.S. national holidays while ensuring that essential services remain available for those in critical need.
