Made Kuti debunks drug use stereotype, says ‘Not All Kutis Use Narcotics’
Afrobeat singer Made Kuti has dismissed the long-standing perception that members of the renowned Kuti family are involved in narcotics, describing the belief as a widespread misconception.
Speaking on the sidelines of the United States Mission’s 250th Independence Day celebration in Lagos, the singer said many people wrongly assume he and his relatives use drugs simply because they belong to the famous musical dynasty.
“A lot of people think I smoke, but I don’t, and even my dad has quit. So, there is a big misconception that the family are all into narcotics, but most of us are not,” Made said during an interview with TheCable.
The singer, who is the son of Femi Kuti and grandson of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, said the stereotype does not reflect the reality of the family.
Asked to describe himself in three words, Made chose “hardworking, loyal and passionate,” joking that his loyalty stems from the fact that he is “a married man.”
The Afrobeat artiste also revealed that when it comes to music, his grandfather remains his favourite Nigerian musician, saying he still listens to Fela’s songs.
Made’s remarks come amid continued public fascination with the Kuti family’s legacy, which has shaped Nigeria’s Afrobeat movement and influenced generations of musicians and social commentators.
