Organisers of the International STEM Olympiad have announced that registration for the 2027 edition of the global competition will open on August 15, 2026, giving Nigerian students the opportunity to compete for a place at the international finals in Lisbon, Portugal.

The announcement follows the conclusion of the 2026 Grand Final held in Rome, Italy, from July 2 to 8, where 1,154 finalists from 54 countries participated in competitions covering science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The International STEM Olympiad is organised by Main Team Organisation GmbH, Germany, and is designed to test students’ analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities and innovation rather than rote memorisation.

According to the organisers, students will compete in four categories—Mathematics, Science, Coding, and Technology and Engineering (Bridge Building).

Registration will be conducted through the competition’s online portal beginning August 15. Parents, schools and individual students will be required to create an account, complete the registration process and pay an entry fee of €20 for each examination category selected.

The competition will begin with online qualification examinations conducted under remote digital supervision. Successful candidates will advance to the virtual final round, while the highest-performing participants will qualify for the “Best of the Bests” (BOB) Global Round.

Top performers in the BOB round will earn invitations to the physical grand final in Lisbon, Portugal, and may also qualify for registration discounts.

The organisers said the competition is open to students from Primary 1 to Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3), with no age restrictions or academic prerequisites for participation in the initial qualification rounds.

Although some preliminary examinations are available in multiple languages, the organisers noted that the BOB round and the international finals will be conducted exclusively in English.

The registration announcement comes after Nigerian students recorded an impressive performance at the 2026 finals in Rome, earning international recognition and reinforcing the country’s growing reputation in global STEM competitions.

Schools, parents and education stakeholders have been encouraged to begin preparations ahead of the registration window to enable more Nigerian students to participate in the 2027 edition.
