Suspected vigilante member arrested over alleged armed robbery in Auchi
A man identified as a member of a local vigilante group has reportedly been arrested in Auchi, Edo State, over allegations of involvement in armed robbery, raising fresh concerns about criminal infiltration of community security outfits.
According to accounts circulating on social media, the suspect allegedly worked as a vigilante during the day while engaging in armed robbery at night. He was reportedly apprehended during an operation after allegedly being caught in the act.
The incident has sparked public debate over the credibility of some vigilante groups and the need for stricter screening, monitoring and oversight of community-based security personnel.

Unverified claims accompanying the reports alleged that some vigilante members in Edo State have links to cult groups and criminal networks, with accusations that certain operatives leak security information to criminal gangs to help them evade arrest.
However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and there has been no official statement from the Nigeria Police Force or the Edo State Government confirming the broader claims.
Security experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of proper vetting, continuous training and effective supervision of vigilante groups to ensure they complement formal security agencies rather than become a security risk.
Authorities are expected to investigate the suspect and determine the extent of his alleged involvement in criminal activities. No official charges or court proceedings had been announced at the time of filing this report
