Nigeria launches unified government service portal, warns citizens against fake immigration websites

The Federal Government has soft-launched the Government Service Portal (GSP), a new digital platform designed to provide citizens and businesses with a single point of access to federal public services, as authorities also intensified efforts to combat online fraud targeting passport applicants.

The twin developments underscore Nigeria’s push to modernise public service delivery while strengthening cybersecurity around government digital platforms.

The Government Service Portal, developed by Galaxy Backbone in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), is intended to serve as a unified gateway through which users can access services offered by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) using a single digital sign-on. Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Nadungu Gagare, represented by Director of E-Government Johnson Bareyi, described the initiative as a significant step toward a more efficient, transparent and citizen-centred public service. The platform is expected to reduce the need for citizens to navigate multiple government websites and create separate accounts for different public services. However, digital governance experts say the success of the portal will depend on how effectively federal agencies integrate their existing systems and share data securely. Many MDAs currently operate separate databases and digital platforms, raising questions about interoperability, service reliability and the protection of users’ personal information.

Analysts also note that widespread adoption will require strong cybersecurity safeguards, consistent internet connectivity and public awareness to encourage citizens to transition to the new platform.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a fresh warning over the proliferation of fake immigration and e-visa websites designed to steal personal and financial information from unsuspecting applicants.

In a public advisory, the Service urged Nigerians and foreign applicants to use only its official online platforms for passport and visa applications, warning that cybercriminals have created fraudulent websites that closely resemble legitimate government portals. (Nigeria Immigration Service)
