A fresh round of political defections has swept through Nigeria’s House of Representatives, with several lawmakers switching party allegiance in what observers see as early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

At Tuesday’s plenary, the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, formally read out notices of defection from affected members, many of whom cited internal crises within their former parties as the primary reason for their decisions.

Three lawmakers announced their move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). They include Thaddeus Attah, who represents Eti-Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos; Usman Zubairu of Kaduna State; and Sani Noma of Kebbi State. Their defections came from the Labour Party, All Progressives Congress (APC), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), respectively.

In a separate development, two lawmakers from Niger and Kebbi states—Abubakar Buba and Ibrahim Mohammed—defected from the PDP to the APC, further strengthening the ruling party’s ranks in the lower chamber.

The Accord party also gained two new members from Osun State. Mudashiru Alani and Adetunji Olusoji both left the PDP to join the party.

Meanwhile, in Taraba State, David Fuoh switched allegiance from the APC to the PDP, highlighting the fluid nature of political alignments across party lines.

Lawmakers who defected consistently pointed to unresolved internal disputes and factional challenges within their former parties, underscoring ongoing instability in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Following the announcements, the House adjourned plenary until Wednesday in honour of the late Muhammad Hassan, who represented Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in Kano State. Hassan passed away on April 10 after a period of illness.
