Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has nominated Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor of Kano State, marking a significant development in the state’s evolving political landscape.

The nomination, transmitted to the Kano State House of Assembly on April 22, 2026, was confirmed in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad. Lawmakers are expected to screen and decide on the nominee in the coming days.

The move follows the resignation of former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026, after weeks of political tension linked to Governor Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress. Gwarzo, who remained aligned with the New Nigeria Peoples Party, stepped down amid mounting pressure and impeachment proceedings initiated by the state assembly.

Garo’s nomination followed consultations with key stakeholders within the APC, including figures associated with former party chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. He was selected from a shortlist that included other prominent politicians in the state.

A seasoned political figure, Garo has held several positions in Kano, including serving as commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, as well as chairman of Kabo Local Government Area. He also previously served as the state organizing secretary of the APC.

Observers say the nomination signals an effort by Governor Yusuf to strengthen alliances within the APC and consolidate political support ahead of the 2027 general elections. Garo’s emergence is also seen as a strategic move to align with influential blocs within the party.

The Kano State House of Assembly is expected to begin the screening process shortly, with a decision on the nomination likely in the coming days. If confirmed, Garo will assume office as deputy governor, filling a vacancy that has shaped political discussions in the state in recent weeks.
