Scenes of unrest and panic unfolded in Durban after mobs reportedly targeted foreign nationals in a wave of violence that authorities say is under investigation.

What began as a loosely organised “clean-up” campaign quickly escalated into street clashes, prompting the deployment of security forces.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed it had deployed officers to multiple locations across the city in an effort to stabilise the situation. Police said they were working to disperse crowds, protect vulnerable residents and prevent further violence.

Officials say investigations are ongoing, with law enforcement agencies seeking to identify those responsible for organising or participating in the attacks. Meanwhile, police presence remains heightened in affected areas as efforts continue to restore order and reassure residents.
