Former England international Paul Merson has suggested that Arsenal still have a strong opportunity to stretch their lead in the Premier League title race, despite Manchester City climbing to the top of the table.
City moved into first place following a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Burnley on Wednesday night.
The result saw Pep Guardiola’s side edge ahead of Arsenal, though only on goals scored, with both teams level on points and goal difference in what has become an intensely competitive title run-in.
However, the title race could yet swing back in Arsenal’s favour over the coming days. The North London side are scheduled to host Newcastle United this weekend before taking on Fulham in their next fixture. Meanwhile, City will not play again in the league until they travel to face Everton.

Merson, speaking during an analysis segment on Sky Sports, described City’s sudden rise to the top as “scary,” noting how quickly the momentum has shifted in the title race.
“From absolutely nowhere, Manchester City is top of the league. It’s scary,” he said. “But Arsenal played twice before City did and could go six points clear again—and they’ve got to make that count.”
The former midfielder stressed the importance of Arsenal capitalizing on their fixture advantage, warning that anything less than maximum points could hand the initiative firmly back to City.
“They have to win those two games against Newcastle and Fulham to put the pressure back on City. It’s a must,” Merson added.
With only a handful of matches remaining, the Premier League title race remains finely poised, with both sides locked in a battle where even the smallest slip could prove decisive.
