Veteran journalist and publisher Dele Momodu has called on Nigerian youths to take a more active role in the political process ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that the contest will be decisive for the country’s future.
Speaking at a youth leadership summit in Lagos on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Momodu described the upcoming elections as a high-stakes “battle of ideas and numbers,” urging young people to move beyond social media advocacy and engage directly in grassroots politics.
According to him, the 2027 polls will go beyond routine electoral exercises, reflecting a broader struggle between entrenched political structures and citizens seeking economic and social reforms.
“When I say 2027 will be war, I mean a contest of strategy, participation, and determination,” he said. “The system will not change unless people are willing to engage it seriously.”
Momodu criticized what he described as an overreliance on online activism, noting that while young Nigerians dominate digital conversations, this influence often fails to translate into electoral outcomes. He urged youths to register with political parties, participate in ward-level activities, and ensure they are actively involved long before election day.
Referencing lessons from previous elections, he noted that structural challenges and administrative barriers can undermine popular sentiment if not matched with strategic participation.
The media entrepreneur also linked youth political participation to broader economic concerns, including rising migration trends, arguing that stronger civic engagement could help address governance issues driving many young professionals abroad.
Momodu, who left the Peoples Democratic Party in 2025, is now aligned with the African Democratic Convergence and has been advocating for a coalition of opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He warned that a fragmented opposition could weaken chances of political change, stressing the need for unity ahead of the elections.
His remarks have sparked mixed reactions within political circles. While some observers view his comments as a call for increased civic responsibility, others have cautioned against the use of charged language, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peaceful democratic processes.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, analysts say youth participation could play a decisive role in shaping the outcome, given their significant share of the voting population.
