Bassey rescues point as Nigeria draw 1–1 with South Africa
The battle for a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains wide open after South Africa and Nigeria played out a 1–1 draw in a pulsating qualifier at the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg, on Tuesday night.
In a clash that once again highlighted the intensity of one of Africa’s fiercest football rivalries, both sides showed grit and determination but ultimately had to settle for a share of the spoils.
The hosts, Bafana Bafana, struck first in the 25th minute when Nigerian captain William Troost-Ekong inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing South Africa the lead and sending the home crowd into wild celebrations.
The setback jolted the Super Eagles into action, and their persistence was rewarded just before halftime. Defender Calvin Bassey pounced on a loose ball inside the box and calmly slotted home to restore parity for Nigeria in the 45th minute.

The second half produced a flurry of chances, with Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman coming close to sealing victory for Nigeria. However, the resilient South African defence, marshalled by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, stood tall to deny the visitors.
South Africa currently top the table with 17 points while Nigeria which is second has 11 points same as Benin and Rwanda that are third and fourth respectively.
The encounter, played before a passionate and vocal crowd, showcased end-to-end football, fierce tackles, and late drama—hallmarks of a classic Nigeria–South Africa showdown.
With crucial fixtures still ahead, both sides know the path to North America in 2026 will demand consistency, resilience, and sharper finishing in the games to come.
