Breaking; Uber announces exit from Nigeria, Uganda after review of operations

Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced plans to discontinue its operations in Nigeria and Uganda, with the decision taking effect on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The company disclosed this in a statement, describing the move as a difficult decision reached after a “thorough review” of its operations in the two markets.

Uber stressed that the decision is limited to Nigeria and Uganda and will not affect its operations in other African countries.

“After a thorough review, we have taken the difficult decision to wind down operations in Nigeria and Uganda, effective September 2, 2026,” the company said.

The announcement marks a major development in Nigeria’s fast-growing ride-hailing and urban mobility sector, where Uber has operated alongside several local and international competitors.

The company said its immediate focus would be on ensuring a smooth transition for those directly affected by the decision.a

According to Uber, it will work to support its drivers, riders and local employees as the wind-down process gets underway.

The company did not, in the statement provided, disclose detailed reasons for its decision to leave the two markets or provide further information on the specific arrangements for drivers and other stakeholders.

Uber’s departure from Nigeria is expected to have implications for the country’s ride-hailing ecosystem, particularly for drivers who rely on the platform for income and commuters who use its services for daily transportation.

The company’s decision also comes amid increasing competition and evolving regulatory and operating conditions within Nigeria’s digital transportation market.

Despite its exit from Nigeria and Uganda, Uber said its broader African operations would continue, stressing that the decision has no impact on its presence in other markets across the continent.

The company said it remained committed to supporting affected stakeholders during the transition as it winds down its operations in the two countries.
