Court prevents Oyo lawmakers from impeaching Deputy Gov Olaniyan
A State High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday issued an order restraining the Oyo State House of Assembly from proceeding with the impeachment of Deputy Governor Rauf Aderemi Olaniyan. The state high court, accordingly, ordered members of the Oyo State House of Assembly to halt every impeachment process commenced against the Deputy Governor of the state.
The presiding judge of the state high court, Justice Ladiran Akintola, in his judgment on Wednesday, at Court 7 of the State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan, ordered that parties to the suit must maintain the status-quo, pending the hearing of the application for interlocutory injunctions before the court.
Deputy Governor Olaniyan had filed the suit in court challenging the impeachment proceedings against him by the state lawmakers, seeking the court to issue an injunction to stop the “faulty process” of his impeachment by the House of Assembly.
The court had on Tuesday adjourned the case to Wednesday because of the absence of the counsel to the Oyo State House of Assembly, the Speaker of the House and Clerk.
Members of the Oyo State House of Assembly commenced the Impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Rauf Olaniyan after his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party that brought him to power.
