Group mourns, describes late Buhari a virtuous leader
The Joint Action for Good Governance (JAGG) a human rights organisation has described the of former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR as an ambassador of good governance.
JAGG in a statement jointly signed by its National Vice President Abdulwaheed Odunuga and National Secretary Adekunle Aderibigbe affirmed former President Buhari’s virtues of commitment, discipline and dedication.
The statement reads in part, “The Joint Action for Good Governance (JAGG) today joins the millions of Nigerians and well-wishers across the globe in expressing profound sorrow and extending deepest condolences on the passing of His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who transitioned to eternity on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
President Buhari’s life was a testament to unwavering dedication to Nigeria, marked by diverse roles and a consistent pursuit of national interest. From his early days in the military, rising through the ranks to become the Head of State, to his later emergence as a democratically elected President, his journey was intricately woven with the fabric of Nigeria’s history.
JAGG recognizes and appreciates his deep-seated commitment to several pillars of good governance and national progress:
– The Fight Against Corruption: President Buhari’s resolute stance against corruption was a defining characteristic of his public service. He was widely perceived as a man of integrity, and his administration initiated various measures, including the Treasury Single Account (TSA), to curb financial excesses and promote transparency.
– National Unity and Security: Throughout his career, he remained a steadfast advocate for Nigeria’s unity and territorial integrity. His administration intensified efforts to combat insurgency and other security threats, striving to restore peace and stability to all parts of the nation.
– Discipline and Patriotism: He consistently emphasized the importance of discipline, order, and national pride, both within the public sector and among the citizenry. His “War Against Indiscipline” in his military era, though authoritarian, left an indelible mark on the national psyche.

– Infrastructure Development: One of the most visible legacies of his democratic presidency was the unprecedented focus on critical infrastructure. Projects such as the Second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge Rail, and numerous road networks stand as enduring testaments to his commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s physical landscape and fostering economic growth.
– Economic Reforms: His administration took significant steps towards reforming key sectors, most notably the signing of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and the transformation of the NNPC, which are poised to reshape Nigeria’s oil and gas industry for future generations.
While no leadership is without its challenges, President Buhari’s unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential and his consistent drive towards a more disciplined, unified, and developed nation cannot be gainsaid.
