INEC tasks NASS on speedy passage of Electoral Act Amendment Bill

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at tis first quarterly meeting with stakeholders in the country, tasked the National Assembly on speedy passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill as the federal legislature resumes on Tuesday.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at the stakeholders meeting acknowledged that the Electoral Amendment Bill is before the National Assembly, noting that the Commission is encouraged by the assurance of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, “to give priority attention to the Bill when the National Assembly reconvenes from its recess today, and the commitment by the President to assent to the Bill as soon as the issue of mode of primaries by political parties is resolved.”

He declared: “We look forward to a speedy passage of the Bill, which is crucial to our preparations for future elections.

“As soon as it is signed into law, the Commission will quickly release the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2023 General Election based on the new law.”

INEC data of the weekly update on Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), at Quarter 3, Week 2 on Monday, 17th January 2022, are as follows:

1. Fresh Registrants: 5,027,204

2. Completed Online and Physical Registration: 2,563,068

3. Male (Completed Registration): 1,292,823

4. Female (Completed Registration): 1,270,245

5. Persons Living with Disability (Completed Registration): 24,129

6. Type of Registration

     Online – 1,054,501

     Physical – 1,508,567

7. Youth (18- 34 years): 1,783,313.

Prof. Yakubu, in his at the first quarterly meeting with political parties for the year 2022 held at the INEC Conference Room, Abuja, on Tuesday, congratulated the Chairman of Action Democratic Party (ADP), Engineer Yabagi Sani, on his election as Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC); including other members of the executive committee of IPAC. He noted that the Commission worked closely with the immediate past leadership of IPAC chaired by Dr Leonard Nzenwa; he assured IPAC of the Commission’s continuous cooperation and support for the umbrella body of political parties in Nigeria, and cooperation with IPAC in line with the guiding principles enshrined in its Code of Conduct.
