JUST IN: At last, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United jersey number revealed
Cristiano Ronaldo who has been reported to be set for a return to Old Trafford has been tipped to be reunited with his famous No. 7 jersey that he left at United twelve years ago to join Real Madrid in a then world-record transfer fee.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was understood to have informed Juventus that he wanted to leave the club earlier this week and after Manchester City initially emerged as frontrunners for his signature, United swooped in at the eleventh hour to hijack the deal.
Remarkably, United on Friday afternoon officially confirmed that Ronaldo would be returning to Old Trafford after more than a decade of departing the Old Trafford.
The 36-year-old, nicknamed CR7, famously wore the No.7 shirt during his first spell with the Red Devils, but that is currently being worn by veteran forward Cavani.
Meanwhile, it is now understood that United legend Rio Ferdinand – who actually spoke to Ronaldo to convince him to snub City – has dropped a hint that Cavani may have given up the hallowed jersey, assuming Premier League rules allow it.
‘Just to think Cavani could be the back-up for Ronaldo, it’s unbelievable,’ said Ferdinand on his FIVE YouTube show as he reacted to United’s announcement.
‘Cavani, I have to say, what a man! He saw who was coming to town and gave up the No.7 shirt.’
At this point Ferdinand appeared to look as though he had given the game away and started to backtrack, continuing: ‘Maybe? I don’t know! Does he do that or not?
‘At the end of the day you know what the problem might be is that the shirts have been registered, maybe. And that might be an issue. So he might not be able to be No.7 so we’ll see.’
Although United’s offer for Ronaldo has been accepted by Juventus they still have to agree personal terms with the forward – though that is not expected to be a problem – while he also needs to undergo a medical.
It is notable to say that Ronaldo’s imminent arrival at Old Trafford will certainly sum up an unbelievable summer for the Red Devils who have previously secured a deal for their long time target Jadon Sancho while also ensuring a reunion of CR7 with Raphael Varane.
