Katsina partners UNICEF to protect rights of women, children

The Katsina State Government says it has commenced training of 140 auxiliary social workers on how to identify and report cases related to Gender Based Violence (GBV), and Child trafficking in the state.

The Special Adviser to Governor Dikko Radda, Hajiya Jamila Abdu-Mani, disclosed this at the the inauguration of the training on Tuesday in Katsina.

The training was facilitated by the Department of Girl Child Education and Child Development in the state in collaboration with UNICEF, Kano Field Office.

According to Abdu-Mani, participants will be deployed to report issues of sexual violence, banditry attacks and family disputes, among other from rural areas.

The Special Adviser was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the department, Alhaji Aminu Badaru-Jikamshi,

Abdu-Mani explained that the training would be conducted in batches with the first batch selected from Safana, kurfi and Kankara local government areas.

She added that the second batch would draw participants from Batagarawa, Mani, Funtua, Daura and Katsina local government areas.

Abdu-Mani said the participants would be recruited by the government and were expected to work with existing social workers.

She urged the participants to reciprocate government’s gesture by working towards achieving its objectives.

“I urge you not to maltreat or harass individuals or groups of people during your course of work,” she said.

Earlier, UNICEF Focal Person in charge of the department, Hajiya Samira Nasir, said the training was targeted at protecting the rights of children and women.

She said the state was faced with shortage of social workers, hence the need for the recruitment.

Nasir noted that the training would assist the participants and the state to identify GBV cases, especially in the rural areas. (NAN)
