Koeman resigns as Netherlands coach after World Cup exit

Ronald Koeman has stepped down as head coach of the Netherlands following the team’s dramatic exit from the FIFA World Cup at the hands of Morocco.

Koeman announced his resignation in a statement shared on Instagram on Tuesday, a day after the Dutch were eliminated in the Round of 32.

“Last night I took the decision to end my stint as head coach of the Dutch National Team,” he wrote.

“We all shared the dream of making history at this World Cup, but we fell short. No one is more disappointed by that than I am. As head coach, the responsibility ultimately rests with me.”

The Netherlands, considered among the tournament favourites, were knocked out after losing 3-2 in a penalty shootout to Morocco following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey.

The Dutch appeared on course for victory after Cody Gakpo gave them the lead, but Morocco forced the match into extra time when Issa Diop scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser before going on to triumph in the shootout.

Koeman’s resignation brings an end to his tenure after the disappointing early exit from the tournament.
