Lagos targets 19 CNG stations by Q1 2027 to ease queues
By Diden Abigail Owuntarose
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to increase the number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across the state to 19 by the first quarter of 2027, as part of efforts to expand access to alternative fuel and reduce queues at existing refuelling facilities.
The Managing Director of Ibile Oil and Gas Corporation (IOGC), Tayo Gbajumo, disclosed this on Thursday during a media briefing on the 2026 Lagos Energy Summit scheduled to hold from November 10 to 12.
Gbajumo said the state was collaborating with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to develop CNG infrastructure and improve access to the fuel for motorists and commercial transport operators.
According to him, Lagos currently has four operational CNG stations in Ikorodu, Agege, Ojota and Oshodi, while five additional facilities are expected to be commissioned by November 12.
He explained that inadequate infrastructure was responsible for the long queues at existing stations, adding that the expansion would improve accessibility and reduce waiting times.
“We’re really working hard with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to develop infrastructure for CNG across the state. By Q1 2027, we’ll have 19 stations across Lagos State,” he said.
Gbajumo further disclosed that the state plans to establish an additional 10 stations by the first quarter of 2028 as part of its continued investment in alternative energy infrastructure.
On vehicle conversion, he said motorists would spend between ₦700,000 and ₦1 million to convert their vehicles to CNG, depending on the quality and standard of equipment used.
He, however, advised motorists to ensure that certified engineers handled the conversion process to guarantee safety.
Gbajumo maintained that CNG could provide significant fuel savings for motorists, noting that filling a 60-kilogramme tank costs approximately ₦5,000 and could provide a driving range of about 200 kilometres, depending on usage.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, said the forthcoming Lagos Energy Summit would bring together regulators, investors, energy experts and other stakeholders to discuss challenges across the energy value chain.
He said discussions would cover electricity supply, renewable energy, metering, energy affordability and alternative transportation fuels, including CNG and electric vehicles.
The commissioner added that the state was seeking practical solutions to improve energy access, affordability and efficiency.
The expansion of CNG infrastructure is expected to provide additional fuel options for motorists and transport operators amid rising transportation costs and efforts to promote alternative energy sources.
