Loius Van gaal: De Ligt should go to Barcelona, Man City
Louis van Gaal does not recommend Matthijs de Ligt’s transfer to Juventus, but to FC Barcelona or Manchester City. That told the 67-year-old Amsterdammer Wednesday evening at Ziggo Sport.
“De Ligt at Juventus? I think De Ligt can play in any competition,” says Van Gaal. “In Italy they are the masters of defense, so he can best develop there. If I had the chance I would go to Barcelona. They have central defenders who are not too good, so he will play there. Or I would go to Manchester City. I don’t think the central defenders are that great either, so he’ll play there too. ”
Van Gaal does not think that De Ligt should stand still in his development at this age (19). So the defender must go to a club where he is in the base every match. “I think you should play at that age. At Juventus they have Bonucci and Chiellini. It is harder to play them out.”
Ajax played a 1-1 draw against Juventus in the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday. The team is not hopeless for the return, says Van Gaal. “With Madrid in the back of your mind, you still have opportunities. I just know that with that creativity Ajax will always make a goal, so 1-1 is not so bad. Ajax will also make a goal there.”
