Man risks jail for stealing N80,000 “ponmo”

For breaking into a shop at Ojokoro, a Lagos suburb, and stealing cow skin popularly called “ponmo” , one Adesanya Tobi, 26, has landed himself in court.

National Daily gathered that the suspect was on Wednesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court after he was said to have stolen 44 pieces of “Ponmo” valued at N80,000.
The police prosecutor, Sgt. Eruada Victor, explained to the court that the accused committed the offence on March 25 at Ijaye Bus Stop, Ojokoro, Lagos.
Tobi, with unfixed address, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of breaking and stealing preferred against him.
It was further learnt that the accused broke into the shop of one Yusuf Iyabo, the owner of the cow skin, and removed 44 pieces.
The suspect was arrested by the vigilance group deployed to the area by the residents and the offences are contrary to sections 285 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
In addition, as proof of evidence, the iron rods and cutlasses he used to damage the door of the shop before gaining entry were recovered.
If convicted, he might risk three years jail.
However, the Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum while the case was adjourned to April 17 for mention.
