MTN leads August dividend rally, declares N26 interim dividend
Investors in the Nigerian stock market are turning their attention to MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, which has announced a N26.00 interim dividend per share, one of the biggest shareholder payouts scheduled for August, as eight companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) prepare to close their dividend qualification windows this month.
The qualification dates, contained in corporate disclosures filed with the NGX, determine which shareholders will be eligible to receive declared dividends. Investors must own the shares on or before the qualification date to qualify for the payout.
Beyond MTN, companies across telecommunications, energy, agriculture, insurance, hospitality, investment, environmental services and publishing sectors have lined up dividends, underscoring improved corporate earnings and stronger shareholder returns despite Nigeria’s challenging economic environment.
MTN Nigeria has fixed August 20, 2026, as its qualification date, with payment scheduled for September 7, 2026.
The telecom giant’s dividend announcement follows a remarkable financial turnaround. The company posted N5.20 trillion in revenue for the 2025 financial year, representing a 54.92 per cent increase from N3.36 trillion recorded a year earlier.

More significantly, MTN rebounded from a N400.44 billion loss in 2024 to post N1.11 trillion profit after tax in 2025, while returning to positive retained earnings of N400.40 billion.
Capital market analysts say the wave of dividend declarations reflects improving corporate resilience and renewed confidence among listed companies.
Speaking on the development, investment analyst Bisi Amikanle, Managing Director of Asset Clients, said companies with strong cash flows are increasingly rewarding shareholders despite prevailing macroeconomic pressures.
“Dividend payments remain one of the strongest indicators of corporate health. Companies that consistently reward shareholders are demonstrating confidence in their earnings sustainability and future cash generation,” he said.
Another market analyst, Ambrose Omordion, Chief Operating Officer of InvestData Consulting Ltd., noted that dividend-paying stocks often attract increased buying interest ahead of qualification dates.
“Historically, investors reposition into fundamentally strong dividend stocks before qualification dates. MTN, Seplat and Presco are among the companies likely to attract attention because of their impressive earnings and dividend yields,” he explained.
According to him, investors should look beyond dividend announcements and evaluate companies based on long-term earnings capacity, cash flow strength and future growth prospects.
Among the companies announcing payouts, Seplat Energy Plc stands out with a combined dividend of 12 US cents per share, comprising a five-cent interim dividend and a seven-cent special dividend.
Using the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) closing rate of N1,368.50 per dollar as of July 30, 2026, shareholders are expected to receive approximately N164.23 per share.
The indigenous energy company reported revenue of N4.14 trillion, up 150.39 per cent, while profit after tax rose to N241.58 billion.
