NAF recovers more wreckage from fatal Ondo aircraft crash
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has recovered additional components from its ATR 42-500 aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as multi-agency teams continue search and recovery operations at the accident site.
The Air Force disclosed the development on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, saying specialist divers from the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) were conducting underwater recovery operations alongside its team.
According to the NAF, the operation involves hydrographic surveys, satellite-based search-and-rescue imagery, mud excavation and the pumping out of excess water to improve access to areas where aircraft wreckage and other relevant materials may be located.
The Air Force said the recovered components would be documented and preserved to support the ongoing investigation into the crash.
The challenging terrain around the crash site, which includes swampy and submerged areas, has complicated efforts to retrieve the wreckage and other evidence.
The aircraft, identified as NAF 931, crashed on October 5 while travelling from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos on a routine mission.
The incident claimed the lives of all 25 people reported to have been on board, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers, according to subsequent Air Force accounts.
On Tuesday, October 13, the NAF announced the establishment of a 12-member board of inquiry to determine the circumstances and causes of the crash and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents.
The board includes specialists in aviation operations, flight safety, piloting, air traffic control, aircraft engineering and maintenance, alongside representatives of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the NSIB.
The Air Force has urged the public to avoid speculation about the cause of the accident until the investigation is completed and its findings are considered.
Recovery operations remain ongoing as investigators work to secure relevant evidence and establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
