NCC launches device checker app to curb fake, cloned mobile phones

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has stepped up efforts to rid the country’s telecommunications market of counterfeit, cloned and unauthorised mobile devices through the implementation of its Device Checker Platform.

The Commission said the platform would strengthen compliance with equipment Type Approval regulations, protect consumers and safeguard the integrity of devices connected to Nigerian telecommunications networks.

The Zonal Controller of the NCC Zonal Office disclosed this on Thursday, October 29, 2026, during a media briefing at the Commission’s zonal office.

The initiative allows consumers and authorised industry stakeholders to verify the Type Approval status of SIM-enabled devices using their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers.

According to the Commission, the platform is particularly important as Nigeria’s digital economy expands and the need to ensure that communications devices meet established technical and regulatory standards becomes more critical.

As part of its implementation efforts, the NCC disclosed that it had streamlined its licensing and regularisation process, enabling a significant number of device dealers in Kano State to obtain the necessary licences.

It also revealed that sensitisation programmes had been organised for importers and other industry stakeholders in Lagos and other parts of the country to improve awareness of Type Approval requirements and obligations under the Device Checker framework.

To simplify compliance, the Commission has developed a user-friendly application that enables authorised stakeholders to scan device IMEI numbers and upload relevant information directly to the platform.

The NCC said the application would improve efficiency, facilitate device identification and make compliance easier for industry operators.

Consumers can also check the regulatory status of mobile devices before purchasing them through the Commission’s online portal at www.ncc.gov.ng/devicechecker by entering the device’s IMEI number.

Manufacturers, importers, distributors and dealers have been directed to consult the Type Approval and Device Verification Guide available at www.ncc.gov.ng/DeviceCheckerGuide for information on their obligations.

Similarly, organisations seeking Equipment Type Approval can access application requirements and procedures through the Commission’s website at www.ncc.gov.ng/industry/numbering-type-approval/type-approval.

Addressing concerns over data privacy, the NCC clarified that the Device Checker Platform was not a surveillance tool and would not provide access to personal information stored on users’ devices.

It explained that the platform does not access private messages, photographs, contacts, financial information or other personal content, stressing that its operations are strictly limited to device identification and regulatory compliance verification.

The Commission urged consumers to verify the status of mobile devices before purchase, patronise reputable and licensed dealers, and take advantage of its online resources and consumer support channels.

It also called on manufacturers, importers, distributors and dealers to familiarise themselves with the Type Approval and Device Verification Guide and ensure full compliance with its regulatory requirements.

For enquiries, complaints and assistance, consumers can contact the NCC through its 315 Consumer Toll-Free Number.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to consumer protection, fair competition, network integrity and the development of a trusted telecommunications ecosystem in Nigeria.
