Nigeria @ 61: Why Nigerians must be thankful – Okowa
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, says though many Nigerians may not see the need to celebrate especially in the light of the myriad of security and economic challenges, Nigerians should be thankful for a united progressive nation.
Governor Okowa made the call during the 61st Independence anniversary celebration at the Cenotaph, Asaba.
The Governor represented by his Deputy Barrister Kingsley Burutu Otuaro expressed hope that Nigeria will come out of its present challenges stronger and live up to its name as the giant of Africa and will be the envy of the World.
Barrister Otuaro noted that every Independence anniversary offers Nigerians the opportunity to reflect on the journey so far and reaffirm their commitment to sustaining and building on the legacies of the heroes past.

He said though many Nigerians may not see the need to celebrate especially in the light of the myriad of security and economic challenges, Nigerians should be thankful for a united progressive nation.
He urged the people to continue to pray for political leaders and hold them accountable to the principles of good governance predicated on fairness, equity and Justice.
The Deputy Governor pledged to continue to invest in policies and programmes that will give hope to the younger generations and create limitless opportunities for employment in addition to accelerating infrastructural development for growth and urban renewal.
Otuaro said his administration has continued to carry out infrastructural upgrades in public primary and secondary Schools while retooling the curricula to make it more relevant in the twenty first century marketplace.

He noted that access has been broadened for tertiary education with the establishment of three new Universities àdding that the government goal is to provide the highest quality of education for youths to acquire the right tools to become global players.
The Deputy Governor emphasized that through the entrepreneurship development programme and policy on technical and vocational education, the government has raised the bar in skills Acquisition for youths.
Otuaro urged Deltans to strengthen peaceful coexistence and harmonious living among the various ethnic nationalities and shun prejudice in order to build a stronger delta.
