Nigeria’s solid minerals industry is set for a defining moment as the inaugural Solid Minerals Excellence Awards (SOMEA) prepares to hold on May 14, 2026, marking a shift in national attention toward a sector increasingly seen as the backbone of the country’s post-oil economy.

The high-profile event will take place at the Abuja Continental Hotel, drawing policymakers, investors, and industry leaders from across the globe.

Long overshadowed by crude oil, Nigeria’s vast deposits of lithium, gold, limestone, and rare earth elements are now being repositioned as critical drivers of industrialization and technological growth.

Analysts say the sector’s rising profile reflects global demand trends, particularly for minerals essential to electric vehicles and renewable energy systems.

Backed by the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, SOMEA 2026 is being framed as a landmark platform to recognize key players transforming the industry.

The awards aim to spotlight companies and individuals championing innovation, sustainability, and large-scale investment in mining.

In an official endorsement, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Henry Dele Alake, described the initiative as a timely intervention aligned with the federal government’s reform agenda.

He noted that the awards promote responsible and transparent mining practices, while enhancing investor confidence and strengthening Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global minerals market.

According to Project Coordinator Femi Da-silva, the event represents a long-overdue recognition of an industry that has quietly supported economic development for decades. He emphasized that SOMEA seeks to elevate the sector’s profile, positioning it as central to Nigeria’s future prosperity.

“The era of operating in the shadows is over,” Da-silva said, noting that the awards will bring prestige and visibility to stakeholders shaping the next phase of national growth.

The event comes amid sweeping reforms aimed at modernizing the mining sector. Under the leadership of the ministry, efforts are underway to transition from largely artisanal operations to a more formalized, technology-driven industry with improved safety standards and regulatory oversight.

These changes have begun attracting renewed interest from international investors.

The awards ceremony will feature several high-impact categories reflecting the sector’s evolving priorities. These include recognition for leading mining companies, excellence in sustainable and safe operations, and outstanding contributions to sectoral growth.

With the theme “Unlocking the Future,” SOMEA 2026 is expected to convene top government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and captains of industry, underscoring Nigeria’s strategic pivot toward solid minerals as a cornerstone of economic diversification.

As the country navigates a gradual transition away from oil dependency, the event is being positioned as both a celebration of progress and a signal to global markets that Nigeria is ready to compete as a major mining destination.
