Obasanjo honors IBB, Igbinedion with special visits for birthday celebrations
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo spent Sunday honoring two prominent Nigerian figures, former military president Ibrahim Babangida and Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, as part of their birthday celebrations.
Obasanjo visited the Esama in Benin, Edo State, who turned 90, and then proceeded to Minna, Niger State, to celebrate with Babangida, who turned 83 in late August.
Obasanjo had been abroad during Babangida’s official birthday on August 27 and used this opportunity to visit both influential leaders in person.
His first stop was in Benin, where he joined family, friends, and well-wishers at a Thanksgiving Mass led by the Catholic Archbishop of Benin Diocese.
The event was a grand affair, and Obasanjo remarked on Esama’s lasting legacy, noting the large turnout.

“Your legacy in history is assured, as demonstrated by the mammoth crowd here to celebrate with you,” Obasanjo stated in his private remarks to Igbinedion.
Following the celebrations in Benin, Obasanjo traveled to Minna to visit Ibrahim Babangida. During his visit, he lauded Babangida’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape and expressed his joy over the former leader’s good health.
“I was unable to visit earlier due to my overseas commitments, but I am glad to be here now to celebrate with you,” Obasanjo shared, offering prayers for continued good health for Babangida.
Obasanjo’s visits underscored the deep respect and camaraderie between the former heads of state, highlighting their shared history and lasting influence on Nigeria’s political and social fabric.
