Ronaldo salutes Messi after Argentina farewell
Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to longtime rival Lionel Messi following the Argentine star’s emotional farewell from international football.
Messi played his final match for Argentina on Tuesday night, scoring once and providing two assists as the world champions defeated Benin 3-0 at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
The 39-year-old described the occasion as “the saddest day of my career” after more than two decades representing his country.

Following the match, Ronaldo commented on Messi’s Instagram post marking the end of his international career.
“Leo, so many years defending your country and a story that will live on forever. You have all my respect for everything you’ve achieved with Argentina. A hug,” Ronaldo wrote.
The message was widely reported, with Spanish newspaper Marca among the outlets highlighting the Portuguese forward’s tribute to his longtime rival.
Despite their intense rivalry for more than 15 years, Ronaldo and Messi have repeatedly expressed admiration for each other’s careers.
Messi announced his retirement from Argentina duty in late August following the team’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain. He cited the emotional and physical demands of the tournament, alongside the illness and subsequent death of his father, Jorge Messi, as factors in his decision.
Messi ended his international career with 208 appearances and 126 goals for Argentina. He also captained the national team to the 2022 World Cup title and Copa América triumphs.
Ronaldo and Messi have continued to exchange messages of respect in recent years, including Ronaldo’s support following the death of Messi’s father earlier this year.
The latest tribute highlights the mutual respect between two football icons whose careers have been defined by remarkable longevity, individual achievements and success on the international stage.
