Speaker Abbas withdraws controversial counter subversion bill
Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has withdrawn the controversial Counter Subversion Bill, which proposed a 10-year jail term, a N5 million fine, or both for individuals who refuse to recite the national anthem and pledge.
The bill had sparked widespread public outrage.
In response, Musa Krishi, the Speaker’s spokesperson, released a statement on Wednesday confirming the bill’s withdrawal after Abbas took into account the concerns raised by the public.
“In response to the voices and concerns of the people, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., has decided to withdraw the Counter Subversion Bill and other related draft legislation,” Krishi stated.

The decision came after Abbas engaged in extensive consultations with various stakeholders and carefully considered the nation’s current circumstances.
“Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, a champion of the people’s interests, has always prioritized listening to the citizens and fostering unity.
“His decision reflects his commitment to ensuring that the House remains truly the People’s House,” the statement continued.
Krishi emphasized that Abbas acknowledged the concerns raised and assured the public that he would never support any action that could disrupt the peace and unity of the nation.
The bill and other related legislation, introduced on July 23, 2024, have now been officially withdrawn.
