U-17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos Beat Mexico to Reach Quarter-Finals
Nigeria’s Flamingos have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter in Morocco on Thursday.
The Nigerian side secured the victory at Pitch 2 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, near Rabat, to keep their hopes of winning the tournament alive.
Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute, giving Nigeria the lead after sustained attacking pressure in the first half.

The Flamingos maintained their momentum after the restart, with Mary Dunstan doubling their advantage in the 71st minute to put Nigeria in a strong position.
Mexico refused to give up and pulled a goal back through Emily Delgado deep into stoppage time. However, Nigeria held on despite the late pressure to secure a 2-1 victory and advance to the last eight.
The win continues Nigeria’s recovery in the tournament after an opening-day defeat to Poland. The Flamingos subsequently defeated Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea to progress from the group stage.
Nigeria will face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, after the South Americans eliminated Germany 1-0 in their Round of 16 match.
The Flamingos will now aim to reach the semi-finals as they continue their pursuit of a first U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
