Why attempt to disqualify Al-Makura base on hearing impairment may bring APC a step backward
The contest for who would take over the mantle of leadership of the ruling party in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, All Progressives Congress (APC), is getting to the top of the affairs as the members of the ruling party get closer to the National Convention of the party where elections would be conducted to pick the party executives at the national Level.
Considerably, the National Convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) that was previously scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 26th, 2022 seems to have suffered another setback, as the party stalwarts at the National level plan to postpone the National Convention for another two weeks.
Among those party members who are, currently, vying for the seat of the National Party Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are the former Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura; former two-term Governor of Benue State and the current Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Senator George Akume. Other aspirants for the National Chairmanship of All Progressives Congress (APC) are Chairman of the Senate Services Commitee, Senator Sani Musa; and Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
However, Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura who is being noticeably, favored by the decision of the party to go for a consensus, seems to be facing another political rumble which may likely devastate the political profile of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), if he should be denied the opportunity to lead the party owing to this political rumble.
Tanko Al-Makura, who is being considered to be favored by the consensus choice of the party, is said to be under uncertainty of his aspiration being opposed by some members of his party because of Al-Makura’s hearing impairment.
How This May Affect APC
Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura was a two term former Governor of Nasarawa State and he governed the state without causing a single bit of problem for the state because of his hearing impairment. He has been using technological based hearing aide device, which has artificially corrected the impairment to a great extent.
However, under a democratic party like All Progressives Congress (APC), it would be very dangerous for the party to deny Al-Makura the chairmanship seat of the party, once he is found worthy, because of his hearing impairment.
Precisely, hearing impairment is a sign of “Disability” and this does not translate to “inability.” I mean, if APC should attempt to disqualify or deny Tanko Al-Makura the chairmanship seat of the party base on hearing impairment, it may mean a great disrespect to the disabled men across the Federal Republic of Nigeria and this man have a regrettable consequence for the party.
