While there are strict rules and guidelines for the ingredients that constitute packaged food products, the same cannot be said for the beauty and cosmetic products that are being used daily. It has been found that there are several chemicals present in many beauty and cosmetic products that are actually more harmful than beneficial to the people using it. Since these products are absorbed by the body as creams, soaps and bath wash etc they can get into the blood stream and create havoc within the body. The Nigeria Association of Dermatologists have warned that using mixed skin creams, commonly known as “organic creams”, constituted more danger than good. A consultant dermatologist, Ngozi Akueme, said that many of the organic skin products, which have become major beauty trends, contain high doses of steroids and harmful chemicals including hydroquinone.

Ochronosis; Ochronosis is a rare but possible side effect of using hydroquinone on the skin. It generally occurs from the prolonged usage of hydroquinone in skin bleaching products. This condition causes dark patches of skin discoloration on the areas that bleaching products were used. Skin discoloration may vary in shades of gray and blue. You should seek the advice of a dermatologist to determine the best way to care for your skin and avoid ochronosis.

Damage to gastrointestinal system; Some people have reported to experience gastrointestinal side effects by the use of African black soap. Experts believe that this is due to the cocoa present in African black soap. People have complained of experiencing constipation and stomach upset. This is due to the absorption of mercury chemicals through the skin. Breastfeeding women should avoid using this soap because it may cause harm to the baby and cause colic.

Excessive Skin Infection/Cancer; Some skin whitening soaps are more alkaline. This means that the pH of the product is greater than 7. Whitening soaps that are more alkaline than acidic have a tendency to leave skin susceptible to fungal and bacterial infections. These infections should be treated by a doctor immediately, to avoid permanent skin damage and skin cancers.
