Youths takeover Niamey, form vigilante groups against external aggression

Several youths have taken over the streets of Niamey, Niger Republic, taking positions on strategic locations on red alert to protect their country. The youths formed vigilante groups to guard the city against external aggression.

The youths taking over Niamey, formed vigilante groups in readiness for any military action by foreign governments against the military regime that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

National Daily gathered that the Vigilante groups had set up traffic checkpoints at several roundabouts overnight and were inspecting vehicles moving around the city.

The youths were responding to the expiration of the 7-day ultimatum the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had issued to the Niger Republic military regime to restore constitutional order and the reinstate the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, which elapsed on Sunday midnight.

The youths were identified to be in alliance with the committees that previously organised demonstrations supporting the military regime led by General Abdourahmane Tchiani, former head of Presidential Guard of ousted Bazoum.

ECOWAS had threatened various sanctions including military invasion of Niger.

The military regime in Niger had on Sunday night closed the country’s airspace, warning that any attempt to violate the airspace closure would be met with an “energetic and immediate response.’’

Meanwhile, Mali and Burkina Faso on Monday sent a delegation of government officials to Niger on solidarity visit, with declaration of total support for the sovereignty of the Niger Republic.
