European Council President Charles Michel has urged the Israeli government to cease ongoing violence in the Middle East, emphasizing the need for peace and security.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Michel stated, “This cannot go on.
We want a democratic strong state of Israel living in peace and security side by side with the Palestinian people.”
He underscored the importance of establishing a stable Palestinian state, labeling any escalation that draws Lebanon into conflict as “irresponsible.”
Reflecting on the ongoing crisis, Michel stressed that lasting security cannot exist without peace, adding, “A world that is driven by revenge is a less safe world.”
This plea comes in the wake of a devastating conflict that has resulted in over 41,500 deaths in Gaza, according to the Hamas health authority, following Israel’s military response to a deadly Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
As the situation escalates, the international community watches closely, hoping for a de-escalation that can pave the way for renewed dialogue and a sustainable resolution to the long-standing conflict.
