Dino Melaye acquitted after 6-year legal battle over false information charges
Justice Sylvanus Oriji of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama has discharged and acquitted former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, from criminal charges related to a 2017 assassination plot claim.
Melaye had been arraigned in 2018, accused of providing false information that implicated Edward Onoja, then Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, in the alleged plot.
The case, which faced numerous delays, including the death of the initial presiding judge, lasted over six years. Melaye maintained his innocence throughout, pleading not guilty in 2018 and accusing Kogi State officials of attempts on his life.
Upon his acquittal, Melaye expressed relief, declaring on social media, “Justice served after 6 years. Justice delayed is never Justice denied.” He credited his legal team, led by prominent lawyers Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Ricky Tafa (SAN), for their successful defense.
