NSCDC arrests 15 suspects for illegal mining in Edo

Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested 15 individuals for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities in Egbetua Community, Ososo, located in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State.

Mr. Gbenga Agun, the State Commandant of NSCDC, confirmed the arrests during a press briefing on Thursday in Benin.

He revealed that the suspects were apprehended at a gold mining site in Ode Forest by operatives from the Auchi Area Command on January 27.

Agun emphasized that it is the statutory responsibility of the NSCDC to protect public assets, including lives and the nation’s solid mineral resources.

“The protection of lives, public assets, and solid minerals deposits is part of our core mandate,” Agun stated, adding that the command would not tolerate illegal mining activities in the state.

He also issued a stern warning to other illegal miners, urging them to cease such activities, as the NSCDC remains committed to eradicating criminal activities in the region.

The illegal gold mining site in the community was first discovered in mid-2024, where hundreds of miners were found operating unlawfully.
