Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has confirmed that peace has been restored in Rivers State following a political standoff with suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, but declined to disclose the details of the agreement that ended the feud.

Wike, speaking during a media chat at his Abuja residence on Thursday, acknowledged that while the underlying issues may remain a topic of speculation, the priority now is the return of stability to the oil-rich state.

“I will allow you to speculate. It’s not my business,” Wike said when pressed for details of the peace deal. “All I know is that peace has come. If you are not satisfied with that, there is nothing we can do. What is important is that peace has returned.”

The crisis in Rivers State reached a boiling point earlier this year, leading to a dramatic political deadlock that saw Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the state House of Assembly suspended from office by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in March 2025.

To address the impasse, President Tinubu convened a high-level reconciliation meeting in Abuja last month, bringing together Wike, Fubara, and the suspended lawmakers in a bid to restore calm and ensure governance continuity in the state.

The closed-door meeting was widely reported as a successful intervention, though specifics of the agreement remain under wraps.

The silence surrounding the deal has fueled speculation over the political power dynamics at play between Wike, a former governor of the state and current FCT minister, and his successor, Fubara.

Despite persistent questions, Wike maintained his position not to delve into the particulars of the agreement, focusing instead on the positive outcome.

Political analysts have described the truce as a temporary ceasefire that may require ongoing negotiation and goodwill to sustain. However, residents of Rivers State have welcomed the apparent resolution, which has allowed government operations to resume and tension to ease across the state.

The conflict, which stemmed from allegations of political interference, power struggles, and loyalty disputes, had threatened to destabilize the state’s governance and economic activities.

While it remains to be seen whether the peace will hold, Wike’s affirmation signals that, at least for now, calm has returned to one of Nigeria’s most politically sensitive states.
