A major explosion and fire at a gas processing facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City has left at least 54 people injured and 18 workers missing, prompting a large-scale emergency response operation.

The incident occurred on Sunday at the Barzan gas facility, one of the key components of Qatar’s energy infrastructure. Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion happened during operational procedures at the plant, although authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause.

Emergency response teams, firefighters, and civil defence personnel were swiftly deployed to the facility after the blast triggered a fire and sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky above the industrial zone.

QatarEnergy, the state-owned energy company, confirmed that an incident had occurred at the facility and said emergency protocols were immediately activated to contain the situation.

Officials said 54 workers sustained various injuries, including burns and trauma-related wounds, and were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Search and rescue operations continued through the night as authorities worked to locate 18 workers who remained unaccounted for.

The Ministry of Interior announced that specialist rescue teams from the Internal Security Force, known as Lekhwiya, had been deployed to assist with the search operation and assess damaged sections of the facility.

Authorities said there was no immediate indication of a wider threat to nearby communities and that environmental monitoring teams were conducting assessments to ensure public safety.

While the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation, early indications point to a possible technical malfunction or gas-related incident during plant operations. Officials have cautioned against speculation until a full forensic and engineering review is completed.

Ras Laffan Industrial City is one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) hubs and plays a critical role in Qatar’s energy sector. The Barzan facility is responsible for supplying natural gas used in electricity generation and water desalination across the country.

Energy analysts said any prolonged disruption at the facility could affect domestic gas supplies and industrial operations, although the full impact will depend on the extent of the damage and the speed of recovery efforts.

Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident, while rescue crews continue searching for the missing workers and engineers assess the condition of the affected infrastructure.

Further updates are expected as emergency operations continue and officials release additional information on the cause and consequences of the explosion.
