Police launch investigation after vehicle explosion injures one in Mushin
The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an explosion that injured one person in the Mushin area of Lagos on Tuesday morning, assuring residents that the situation has been brought under control.
The incident occurred at about 6:00 a.m. on Wey Street in Oke Mushin, where an explosive device detonated beneath a Toyota Sienna, leaving the driver injured and causing panic among residents and traders in the area.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle owner had started the engine and was preparing to leave for work when the explosion occurred. The blast damaged the vehicle, shattering windows and blowing out part of the passenger-side door.
The victim sustained injuries from the impact of the explosion and flying debris. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel confirmed that he is receiving treatment and is in stable condition.
Following distress calls from residents, security operatives, including personnel from the Lagos State Police Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit, were deployed to the scene.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, led a team of senior officers and tactical units to the area to assess the situation and coordinate emergency response efforts.
Security personnel cordoned off the affected area while bomb disposal experts conducted extensive searches for possible secondary explosive devices. Authorities later declared the area safe after completing a thorough sweep.
Community leaders, including the Baale of Oke Mushin, Chief Tajudeen Lasisi Farunbi, commended the swift response of security agencies and residents who helped secure the scene pending the arrival of investigators.
Police sources said forensic experts have recovered samples and fragments from the scene for laboratory analysis as part of efforts to determine the composition and origin of the explosive device.
Investigators are also examining possible motives behind the attack and reviewing the victim’s recent activities and associations. Authorities have not ruled out any line of investigation.
In a statement, the police urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic.
“The area has been secured, and there is no immediate threat to residents. Our officers are working diligently to identify those responsible and bring them to justice,” the command said.
The police further disclosed that patrols and surveillance operations have been intensified across Mushin and adjoining communities as investigations continue.
The incident has raised concerns among residents and business owners in the densely populated area, with many calling for increased security presence and intelligence gathering to prevent future attacks.
Authorities have appealed to anyone with useful information about the explosion to contact the nearest police station or security agency.
