Mourinho hails Cucurella for keeping Yamal quiet in Real Madrid’s El Clásico win
Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has praised Marc Cucurella for his defensive performance against Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal in Sunday’s El Clásico, following Madrid’s reported 2-1 victory at Camp Nou.
Mourinho commended the Spanish left-back for remaining composed under pressure and limiting the influence of Yamal, one of Barcelona’s most dangerous attacking players.
Cucurella was reportedly selected ahead of Álvaro Carreras for the encounter, with the decision aimed at neutralising the threat posed by the Barcelona winger.
The defender delivered a disciplined performance over the 90 minutes, restricting Yamal’s opportunities to create dangerous attacking situations and helping his side secure the victory.
Speaking after the match, Mourinho acknowledged the difficulty of defending against Yamal, highlighting the youngster’s technical ability and intelligence, as well as his attempts to draw opponents into disciplinary trouble.
“The kid is very good and difficult because, besides being good, he’s clever,” Mourinho said.
“He made multiple attempts to provoke Cucu into receiving a yellow card, yet Cucu demonstrated remarkable resilience.”
The manager praised Cucurella’s composure, describing the assignment as one of the defender’s most demanding challenges.

“The victory reflected collective excellence, though this was arguably Cucu’s most difficult match, and he prevailed against an exceptionally talented opponent,” he added.
Mourinho explains left-back selection
Mourinho also credited his squad-management approach for helping Cucurella remain physically and mentally prepared for the high-intensity encounter.
The manager explained that having two quality options at left-back allowed him to rotate players and manage their workload ahead of important fixtures.
“We have two top-level left-backs, which also allows me to manage playing time a bit,” he said.
“Álvaro participated in Wednesday’s fixture, which has ensured Cucu maintains optimal physical condition and mental concentration, directing his attention exclusively towards this particular match.”
The comments highlighted Mourinho’s emphasis on tactical preparation and squad rotation in managing demanding fixtures.
Yamal faces another defensive test
Yamal’s attacking ability has made him a major threat for Barcelona, with opposing defenders frequently tasked with limiting his influence through close marking, positional discipline and coordinated defensive support.
Cucurella’s reported display against the teenager underlined the importance of defensive concentration when facing technically gifted wingers capable of changing games with individual brilliance.
Real Madrid’s reported victory over Barcelona also added significance to the contest, with both sides continuing their rivalry in one of European football’s most closely watched fixtures.
Mourinho’s praise for Cucurella reflected the defender’s contribution to the collective effort, particularly his ability to remain disciplined against a dangerous opponent without allowing the contest to become dominated by individual duels.
