From Nigeria to Japan: Idara Michael breaks new ground

Youth development advocate and public speaker Idara Michael is representing Nigeria at the 39th JCI Academy, an international leadership programme taking place in Tokachi Obihiro, Japan.

The academy, which runs from July 2 to 11, 2026, has brought together more than 170 participants from across the world, with Michael serving as Nigeria’s sole delegate at this year’s edition.

Widely regarded as one of Junior Chamber International’s flagship leadership development programmes, the academy provides participants with opportunities to strengthen their leadership skills, build global networks and exchange ideas with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The 2026 edition is themed “Evolve with True Heart,” encouraging participants to embrace leadership founded on empathy, sincerity and meaningful human connection while exploring ways to contribute to more peaceful and prosperous communities.

For Michael, the programme offers a unique opportunity to deepen her leadership capacity through cross-cultural learning while representing Nigeria on the global stage.

Throughout the academy, delegates are participating in workshops, discussions and collaborative activities designed to foster personal growth, strengthen intercultural understanding and build lasting international relationships.

Her participation underscores the growing presence of young Nigerian leaders in global leadership and civic engagement initiatives, reinforcing the country’s contribution to international conversations on youth development and transformative leadership.
