Disturbed by the insistent killings and kidnappings along Abuja-Kaduna road, the Police high command on Tuesday deployed 600 Special Forces and 90 high caliber patrol vehicles to tackle growing insecurity along the expressway.
In addition, a special joint operation have constituted to include personnel of the Nigerian Army and the special forces and patrol vehicles of the police to halt kidnapping on the road.
This new security measures were disclosed by the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan, after the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, briefed the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Police Affairs about the latest efforts to arrest kidnapping on the road.
Although the reason for the deployment could not be linked with the hacking to death of a serving Lance Corporal of the Nigerian Army last weekend, National Daily gathered that Lawan, who came under Order 43 (Personal Explanation), told the Senate that a joint meeting of the Senate and House of Representatives Police Affairs Committee was held on Monday in his Conference Room on how to deal with the incessant kidnapping along Abuja-Kaduna road.
He expressed angst and concern that the “mass kidnapping” and killing of individuals have reached a worrisome dimension that called for grave concern to the two chambers.
The plenary presided over by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, citing relevant section of the Constitution said that the primary responsibility of government remains the security and welfare of the people.
Ekweremadu, therefore, tasked the police to double their efforts with a view to tackling kidnapping and other related crimes in the country.
National Daily recalls that in recent times, several people have been killed and kidnapped along the Abuja-Kaduna express road.
