These groups, initially created under the previous administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki, had been disbanded, but some continued to operate illegally despite repeated directives to disarm.

“The local vigilante group involved in the killings was never profiled or registered with the Edo State Security Corps. Their actions do not reflect the principles of this administration,” a government statement read.
The Inspector General of Police has deployed a special team to track down all individuals involved in the attack. So far, 14 suspects have been arrested, while security operatives continue the manhunt for others. The Edo State Government has assured residents that justice will be served.

Residents have been urged to remain calm as security agencies work to restore peace and prevent further violence.
