Lagos to roll out structured on-street parking scheme, urges motorists to plan ahead

The Lagos State Government has called on motorists to adopt responsible parking habits as it prepares to launch a structured on-street parking programme aimed at improving traffic management, enhancing public safety and creating a more organised parking system across the state.

The appeal was made by the General Manager of the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, who said the initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to reform parking management and ease congestion in Lagos.

According to a statement issued by the state government, Adelabu urged motorists to make parking arrangements an essential part of their travel planning ahead of the commencement of the new programme.

She advised residents to cultivate a new parking culture by considering available parking spaces before embarking on their journeys.

“Before leaving home, motorists should think about where they are going, the most suitable mode of transportation and the availability of approved parking spaces closest to their destinations. Parking should become a pre-thought, not an afterthought,” she said.

The LASPA boss disclosed that the authority had concluded the planning, testing and system enhancement phases of the initiative and was now ready to commence implementation of the enhanced on-street parking scheme.

She explained that roads designated under the programme would be clearly marked to indicate approved parking zones, paid parking areas and locations where parking is prohibited.

Adelabu also urged motorists to pay close attention to traffic signs and pavement markings, including red lines, single yellow lines and double yellow lines, noting that they are critical to effective traffic management and road safety.

She noted that while many Lagosians are already accustomed to paying for parking in various parts of the city, the new initiative seeks to introduce a transparent and regulated system that eliminates informal collections.

“Lagosians are already paying for parking in many parts of the city. Our goal is to ensure that these payments are made through a structured, accountable system that benefits the public rather than unregulated individuals,” she stated.

The LASPA General Manager appealed to motorists to support the reform by complying with parking regulations, obeying traffic signs and embracing responsible parking practices.

According to her, the success of the structured on-street parking programme will depend largely on public cooperation and adherence to the new guidelines.

The Lagos State Government said the initiative is expected to promote orderliness, improve accessibility, reduce indiscriminate parking and contribute to a safer and more efficient transportation system across the state.
