Lagos Taskforce arrests 56-year-old man for dumping refuse in drainage channel [Video]

The Lagos State Environmental Taskforce has arrested a 56-year-old man, John Ehidreme, for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Ikorodu, as the state government intensifies efforts to curb environmental violations and reduce flooding during the rainy season.

The suspect was apprehended at No. 18 Oluoga, Ikorodu, for allegedly disposing of waste in a drainage system, an act authorities say obstructs the free flow of stormwater and contributes to flooding across communities.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the arrest on Sunday, warning residents against indiscriminate waste disposal and stressing that such practices undermine the state’s flood control measures.

According to Wahab, blocked drainage channels remain one of the leading causes of flooding in Lagos, especially during periods of heavy rainfall, and residents have a responsibility to protect public infrastructure by disposing of waste through approved channels.

He noted that while many residents are quick to blame the government whenever floodwaters inundate homes, damage vehicles or render roads impassable, individual actions such as dumping refuse into drains significantly worsen the situation.

The commissioner emphasized that drainage channels are designed to convey stormwater safely and should never be used as waste disposal sites.

He urged Lagos residents to make use of approved waste collection and disposal facilities, warning that anyone caught violating the state’s environmental laws would face prosecution.

The arrest forms part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing environmental enforcement campaign aimed at promoting cleaner communities, preventing avoidable flooding and ensuring compliance with environmental sanitation regulations.

Authorities have repeatedly appealed to residents to support government efforts by maintaining proper sanitation practices, particularly during the rainy season when blocked drains can quickly lead to severe flooding and property damage.
