Dikembe Mutombo, the Congolese-American basketball great and one of the NBA’s all-time best defensive players, has died at the age of 58.
The league announced his passing on Monday, revealing that Mutombo, an eight-time NBA All-Star and Hall of Famer, died after a battle with brain cancer, surrounded by his family.
Mutombo was celebrated not only for his formidable shot-blocking skills and defensive prowess but also for his philanthropic efforts and humanitarian work.
Over his illustrious Mutombo 18-season career, he played for several teams, including the Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks, and Los Angeles Lakers, earning a reputation as a fierce competitor.
His iconic finger wag became a symbol of his defensive dominance.

Beyond basketball, Mutombo was deeply committed to improving healthcare and education in his native Democratic Republic of Congo.
