Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has warned that Nigeria is on the verge of becoming a one-party dictatorship.
In a message to mark the country’s 64th Independence Day, Atiku urged politicians to act swiftly to protect Nigeria’s democracy from what he described as growing oppression.

Atiku expressed concerns about the weakening of opposition parties and accused the ruling party of manipulating internal processes to maintain dominance. He called on politicians of integrity to “reclaim our democracy from the encroaching shadows of oppression.”
While reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic progress, Atiku also lamented the decline in electoral credibility, which he attributed to the influence of the ruling class.
Despite the challenges, he praised the resilience of patriotic citizens and the support of international allies in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
